Aalborg is Denmark's fourth largest city, and has around 118,000 inhabitants, while the entire Aalborg Municipality approx. has 218,000 inhabitants. It is believed that Aalborg emerged as an urban community in the late 900s. In the Middle Ages, things went well for Aalborg, when Aalborg came to control the Limfjord trade. In the 16th century, the good times went even better than before. Aalborg traded with several cities and countries, and therefore Aalborg was also considered a good and rich city. At the end of the 17th century, more than 4,000 people also lived there, and thus Aalborg was Denmark's second largest city. In the 18th century, it began to decline. Aalborg lost bla. trade with Norway, and lost its major key position in the Limfjord region. In the 1830s, fortunately, things started to go the right way for Aalborg again. Several industries were established, such as tobacco factories and distilleries. Trade and shipping were again flourishing, but industry in particular became of great importance to the city in the late 1800s. Throughout almost the entire 20th century, Aalborg was characterized by industry, in fact so much so that they were called "the city with the smoking chimneys". Throughout the 20th century, population growth increased, and about half of the inhabitants worked in industry, but at the end of the century, industry became much less important to Aalborg. Around the 1970s and 1980s, the population declined, but by the 1990s, the number was already beginning to rise again. The city had now transformed from an old industrial city to a murderous city. About 60% of the city's population now worked in the service and education industries. Today, Aalborg is especially known for the Limfjord and the iconic tower "Aalborg Tower".
